What is Vigyan Bhairav tantra?

During the Tantra Meditation Retreat we practice Tantra methods taken from the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra, a 5000 year old scripture comprised of 112 methods for the expansion of consciousness.

The Vigyan Bhairav Tantra Is a key scriptural document of Kashmir Shaivism. The format of this wisdom teaching is offered as a conversation between Lord Shiva and his Beloved Paravati. She asks questions about Life, Love, Meditation and Transcendence and he answers. Each one of his 112 answers is in Sutra form and each answer offers a method of Tantra Meditation.

Through the practice of the methods, the innate wisdom of the person practicing the method will emerge from within, like a bubbling spring. The beauty and poetic rendition of these timeless methods is awe inspiring and it is a supreme joy to dive into them and discover the immediacy of positive transformation.

Devi Asks Shiva:
“O Shiva, what is your reality?
What is this wonder filled universe?
What constitutes seed?
Who centers the universal wheel?
What is this life beyond form pervading forms?
How may we enter it fully,
above space and time, names and descriptions?
Let my doubts be cleared!”
(From the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra)

The 112 methods given by Shiva to his consort Parvati are linked to 12 facets of life, and the ones we work with are:

  • Love & relating
  • Creativity
  • Senses
  • Purification & Healing
  • Body, Breath & Movement
  • Devotion & Knowledge
  • Silent Meditation & Witnessing
  • Subtle Energy Fields
  • Elevation to Higher Consciousness
  • Sex, Birth & Death
  • Playfulness & Wonder
  • The Transcendental (Bindu)

The retreat is offered once per year. Each year, for three consecutive years, we offer one third of the 112 methods. This means, over a three-year period, you have the opportunity of experiencing all of the sublime methods offered in the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra. There is no sequential order to follow however, and no requirement to participate in all three. It is your choice.

Misconceptions about Tantra

Many people have misconceptions about Tantra believing it is all about nudity, sexuality and orgiastic practices. In actual fact, Tantra is a path to Enlightenment, which brings loving awareness to all that we are through methods of Tantric meditation. In this group there will be no requirement for nudity and no intimate sexual interaction.

An Opportunity to Receive Osho Sannyas
There will be a Sannyas Initiation ceremony at some point during the group. This is another regular occurrence at Osho Nisarga and has also been incorporated into the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra Retreat. In this ceremony some group members may wish to be initiated into Osho sannyas, which includes receiving a new name and a mala with a locket with Osho’s picture. This is an entirely optional experience and is open to anyone who loves Osho’s work and vision and is ready to make the jump into a new way of being. Group participants are invited to attend the ceremony, even if they are not interested in receiving sannyas, simply to share in the overflowing joy and celebration of the event.

Living Tantra

In the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra Retreat, we are working with the 112 methods from the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra. The methods work with breath awareness, senses, silent meditation, kundalini energy, chakras, devotion, emotions, dance, sexual energy, subtle energy, nature and awareness in daily life. As we work through these exquisite teachings in a group setting, we are blessed by the meeting of both ancient and modern wisdom. We learn to open ourselves to the multifaceted diamond of our being by bringing loving awareness to all that we are.

There are phases of silence in the retreat as well as periods of group sharing where any concerns around each person’s inner process can be aired and much healing can happen.

Tantra is a life approach which honours and respects all aspects of the human being, whether this be sexuality, love or spirituality. In light of this, we will be opening up and bringing consciousness to these qualities.

One of the meanings of the word Tantra is: ‘transforming poison into nectar.’ This retreat offers the opportunity to transform our misconceptions, our fears, our judgements, and to open the flow of aliveness, love and bliss.

The build-up, refinement and transformation of 12 facets of life force energy during this retreat invite an orgasmic awareness of one’s full sensual being. Within each facet, we offer several enlightening Tantra methods aligned with that particular life principle.

Within a few days, you may sense an on-going ecstatic connection between body and soul, matter and spirit. It is a rare opportunity to explore these powerful Tantra methods, in a highly supportive environment. In this way, we distil the nectar of our inner being to its ultimate potency.

By participating in this retreat, you are offered a unique opportunity to understand the true essence of Tantra; a path for discovering enlightenment in each and every aspect of human life experience.

“During this group you will have the unique opportunity of participating in the communal lifestyle of Osho Nisarga. All people in the community are considered as one, and therefore, maroon robes are worn during the day. This is a device developed by Osho for helping the persona to dissolve and a vibrant and alive energy to be felt throughout the whole body. Each evening, there will be a recorded discourse by Osho, and for this nightly event, white robes are worn, symbolizing the dissolution of the ego and the opening into universal consciousness. These are powerful devices which will greatly support the group process. ” SARITA
